When Matthew came along, we made sure we read up on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (or SIDS or cot death) as we were a little worried about this unexplained illness after hearing and reading about it. We also made sure that he was always sleeping either on his back or on his side. We even went to get him a Sleep Sack, which he didn’t like and refused to be put in one. We also made sure that his nose was not pressing down on the mattress. Even now at 14 months, I occasionally have this worry when he is asleep and I’ll go check on him.
Today, it was reported The New Zealand Herald that scientists have discovered the cause of SIDS. SIDS is due to “an abnormality in the brain that prevented it realising their bodies did not have enough oxygen”.
Well, it’s good to know that it’s no longer a mystery why babies die in their sleep. However, it must be noted that they still haven’t determined how to identify this abnormality in babies. So, parents, you’ll still need to make sure that your babies sleep on their back and that they sleep in their own space and not with you.
