Was reading this news report on News.com.au and was just gripped with both horror and amusement
Parents in Brisbane, Australia are even more kiasu (scared lose, a literal translation from Singlish) than parents in Singapore. They are registering their children for Brisbane’s leading private schools way way way in advance.
The news report quoted one of the Registrar saying their record is a father registering his twin boys within 45 minutes of them being born. And there are even some parents who try to register their children the moment they have gone for their first pregnancy scan.
One of the schools, Brisbane Grammar School, has just 40 places left for Year 8 students that starts their high school education in 2020 and finishes in 2024 (NB: Year 8 is Sec 2 in the Singapore’s context).
And here we are just wondering whether to switch schools for Matthew now since he’s already past 18 months and can go to a normal child care centre. We’re not even thinking about where to send him for kindergarten or primary school, let alone his secondary school. Maybe we should start thinking and try to register him.
